SOLAR WATER PUMPING FEATURES
A solar water pumping installation consists of a pump energized by solar produced electricity from solar panels (see diagram to the left). The quantity of water produced deppends on the intensity of the sunlight and the cloud cover.
The water is pumped to storage tanks for consumption in order to stabilize the water supply without depending on sun conditions. Water can also be pumped directly to sprinklers and drip irrigation tubing for irrigation.
An installation consits of four components-
Solar Pump Highly efficient solar pumps or conventional 3 phase pumps.
Solar Pump Controller that optimizes the solar electricity produced by the panels and supplies automatic operation of the solar water pumping system - automatic off in the event of dry water source or a full tank with automatic restart as the source accumulates water or the tank is emptied.
Solar Panels in PV array or alone with the specific wattage for the necessary pressure and flow rates.
Storage Tank sized for 4-5 days of consumption in installations for domestic or livestock use.
HOW TO INSTALL A SOLAR WATER PUMPING SYSTEM?

Any solar water pumping system is specific to the pump site. To plan an installation, the following information is necessary-
1. Pressure Head (see diagram to the left) from the water level to the discharge point in addition to any other pressures and friction losses in the system for a sprinkler system or pressure tank, etc.
2. Water Volume daily or weekly
3. Solar Conditions at the pump site. An extensive data base is available of historical solar conditions.
4. Pipe Length from the Pump to the Discharge Point
5. Wire Length from the Solar Array to the Pump
The cost depends on the necessary pressure and water volume and sun intensity at the pump site.
Solar water pumping is competitive in cost with fossil fuel powered water pumps.
